Joe Cannon There's not a lot to love about 2020 but this album is pure magic. I'm totally in love with The Glenbrook Pool Song but the absolute best song title of the year is hands down, Some Food Courts Are Better Than Others.
Brilliant, guys, congratulations.

What is Brigadoon? It’s a ripper Scottish festival With over 25, with over 25 With 25 pipe bands, with 25 pipe bands The pipe major sings a command when he stomps his feet on the ground The drum sergeant keeps everyone in time With 25 pipe bands, with 25 pipe bands Lots of games for children to play, lots of games for children to play Like water toss, the cable toss, the tartan warriors chucking the stones They’re chucking the stones, chucking the stones There’s a tenor drum and a snare drum, don’t forget the bass drum You can flourish your hands, ‘cos they’re just like sticks Just like sticks, just like sticks We’re sleeping in a cottage, we’re sleeping in a cottage And we’re leaving soon, and we’re leaving tonight 25 pipe bands, 25 pipe bands, with 25 pipe bands

about

23-year-old Jerrah Patston is a singer and songwriter from the Blue Mountains, and Sounds Like Rain is his debut album.

Sounds Like Rain draws on Jerrah’s unique perspective, and the album brilliantly communicates both the universal and obscure.

It was recorded over two rapid sessions in mid-2020 with long time collaborator Sam Worrad and Aria-nominated producer Chris Hamer-Smith.

Highlights include a celebration of the end of bushfire season (Rain Is Falling), tributes to beloved local landmarks (The Glenbrook Pool Song), a clutch of relatable observations about the everyday (Opal Card, All My Friends, Some Food Courts Are Better Than Others) and an unlikely mini song cycle about Jerrah’s favourite Scottish festival, Brigadoon, in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Sounds Like Rain presents a broader palette of work for Jerrah, with slide and 12-string guitar, additional percussion and gorgeous vocal harmonies (most of which are performed by Jerrah himself).

Jerrah started writing songs at Club Weld, a non-therapy based, professional development program for musicians on the autism spectrum run by Parramatta community-based contemporary arts organisation Information + Cultural Exchange (I.C.E.).

Over the last few years, Jerrah has released recordings from residencies at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Live, The Art Gallery of NSW and The Joan. Most recently he released The Jerrah EP (2019), a live recording of his show at The NOW now festival in Redfern. Jerrah has appeared at the ICC, Henson Park, Bank West Stadium, Petersham Bowling Club and made special appearances on ABC Radio (702 Mornings) and ABCTV (7:30).

Jerrah launched 'Sounds Like Rain' with a sold out performance at The Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub on Friday November 27.

"Patston presents enthusiastic songs about bagpipes, local pools, Coney Island girls, food courts and cricket. It's a clean-cut version of the view askew approach you'd find in classic acid pop, except it comes from a nice guy from the Blue Mountains.

I honestly have never encountered a musician so thrilled to be performing and recording as Jerrah, and it's an absolute treat given that most of the stuff I like is made by curmudgeons for curmudgeons. This one is a joy, for real." - Luke Martin, Cyclic Defrost, Best of 2020
